Commercial Wiring

Commercial wiring is generally done with electrical metallic tubing (EMT) or a flexible metal conduit (FMC). Non Metallic Sheath Cable (ROMEX) is not permitted in commercial buildings. The reason for this is that commercial properties have the potential to have a greater number of people occupying them at one time.

The metallic conduits offer a better resistance to the spreading of a potential fire than Romex. Commercial properties require Ground Fault protection as do the residential homes, but do not require Arc Fault protection or tamper resistant receptacles.

The air conditioning systems in commercial buildings require fire protection in the AC ducts. Commercial buildings also need to have exit and emergency lights for public safety in the event of a power failure.
